Overview

It was constructed in 1395. Gyeongbokgung Palace is often known as”the Northern Palace because its location is farthest to the north in comparison to the nearby palaces Changdeokgung (Eastern Palace) and Gyeonghuigung (Western Palace). Gyeongbokgung Palace is arguably the most stunning, and is the largest of the five palaces.

The building was once destroyed in the Imjin War (1592-1598). But, the palace structures were rebuilt under the guidance of Heungseondaewongun during the reign of King Gojong (1852-1919).

Interestingly, the most significant structures that were built during those of the Joseon Dynasty Gyeonghoeru Pavilion and the pond surrounding Hyangwonjeong Pavilion have remained relatively in good condition. The dias raised and the stone markers in Geunjeongjeon show the typical design style of the period.

The National Palace Museum of Korea is situated outside the Heungnyemun Gate, and the National Folk Museum is located on the eastern end of the Hyangwonjeong Pavillion.
